Dual Holiday Displays Coexist in Raleigh’s Moore Square

December 21, 2009 on News 14 Carolina -

RALEIGH For the past several years, a Nativity scene has gone up in downtown Raleighs Moore Square during the holiday season depicting the birth of Jesus Christ.

But this year it has company. The Triangle Freethought Society, which is made up of atheists, non-theists and free thinkers, unveiled a winter solstice display marking the shortest and darkest day of the year, which lands on Dec. 21. Winter solstice typically marks the middle of winter with celebrations by ancient cultures around the world.

We felt it was important to have a counterbalance to that display this year, so we put a winter solstice display together, said Mark Zumbach, president of the Triangle Freethought Society. Our goal is to point out there are multiple reasons for celebrating the season.

    Mayor Meeker – is smart.

    Agreed, I made my …
Agreed, I made my point about that ignorant in the video, and that’s fine. I am going to move on from this video now, and save my time and energy for something more worthwhile. Arguing with close-minded people is like my 2 year old trying to fit the triangle block into the circle hole; she might try for a while, but after a few attempts she gives up and realizes there’s no point.

  4. downriggershop says:

    ***I had a close …
***I had a close friend in high school who was gay***

    It all fits.

But on the slightest chance you really do have a child on the way, here’s the right way to raise one, as shown by an American legend. Google

@IanBillings00 this guy is a deush bag who just takes random quotes out of context, like all religious people, theres no point trying to argue with him

    ***I much rather… …
    ***I much rather….as I rather….I do not believe***

Ian, do you ever read your own posts? Take a look at how insufferably self-centered you are. Which yet again proves my point that so-called atheists just want to justify their own selfishness. Cowardly types too because their attacks are always on Christianity, never Islam. Do you think the bald freak in the video above would dare to try it on, with Muslims?

  7. IanBillings00 says:

    You are quite …
You are quite clearly attempting to misrepresent things I have said, and considering that people could scroll up and re-read my comments…

I am sorry my friend, but you cannot say, ‘That’s a lie! This is how it really is!’ – giving nothing to support your point, and expect people to believe you.

You’ve shown your true colors. It is apparent you are just a troll trying to provoke people, for what reason I cannot imagine. It is too late, you have proven that you are an ignorant idiot.

  8. IanBillings00 says:

    I much rather say …
I much rather say Xmas, just as I rather say Xtian. Giving the title ‘Christ’ signifies that you actually believe Jesus was some sort of Messiah, and I do not believe Jesus was anything more than another crazy self-appointed ‘prophet’, just like all of the rest, if he even existed at all. From the evidence found outside of the bible, the only thing that is even slightly supportive is that the idea of Jesus is just a basterdization of the original cult of Zoroastrianism.

  9. mase5701 says:

And by the way, I’m …
And by the way, I’m not gay, I’m happily married with a kid on the way.

This is personal b/c I had a close friend in high school who was gay and commited suicide b/c his own mother turned on him ONLY because of religious intolernace.

  10. downriggershop says:

    He! I’ve shown …
He! I’ve shown that your arguments, your attitudes towards Christmas, even your screen names are nonsensical and illogical. Here’s a shortlist of your recent collective lies:

Christmas celebrates the birth of Mithras
    Hitler was a Christian
    The Pope assisted Hitler
    Christians invented/maintained slavery

I hope you guys aren’t American citizens because that great country doesn’t deserve the virus of your sick philosophy.

  11. downriggershop says:

    ***I also …
***I also celebrated xmas this Dec 25th***

‘Xmas’? Oh, you mean Christmas, Ian. The day of the year when Christians celebrate the birth of their Saviour.

And when atheists suppress their hate and intolerance, in order to score some food and gifts.

  12. downriggershop says:

    ***What the …
***What the does gay rights or abortion rights have to do with politics????***

They’re identifiers. To put gay ‘rights’ and abortion ‘rights’ ahead of religious freedoms clearly marks you as a lefty.

    Or, a gay abortionist.

    @downriggershop
Actually, Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever is a character in Stephen R. Donaldson’s books. I like the name better than Gandalf2956732045930177. But lack of belief is my default position until you give me proof. Real-world proof.

  14. IanBillings00 says:

    This fellow here, …
This fellow here, Mr. Fisherman, quite clearly has about as much knowledge of history as any other highschool-dropout, who spends his nights reading biased web pages written by xtian apologists, and ignoring any “reality” that contradicts his beloved theologians and their ever-shifting interpretations, necessary so they will not be seen as fundamentalist fanatics.

He is quite clearly deluded, and has no strong arguements, as nearly every reply from him is just another irrelevant ad hominem.

  15. IanBillings00 says:

    I also celebrated …
I also celebrated xmas this Dec 25th, along with my wife and my 2-yr-old daughter. I understand the origins of the holiday are a modification of the celebration of the birth of Mithras from a Roman tradition, but I’m sure you’re above anything that shows reality might not necessarily agree with your preacher, so I don’t expect you to know about that.

While sitting at your tree, pull out your bible and read Jeremiah 10, decorated trees are against your god’s words. But I’m sure you knew that.

  16. mase5701 says:

    I am economically …
I am economically conservative, and I assume you are too stupid to know what that means judging by your stream of bull shit.

And confused about politics????? What the does gay rights or abortion rights have to do with politics????? You are so stupid it baffles me.

And he didn’t trash a religious display, he simply put his own thoughts there, but clearly you percievce it as an attack.

  17. downriggershop says:

    ***I look for the …
    ***I look for the truth***

Right. A guy who claims to be ‘looking for the truth’, but selects as his screen name ‘tctheunbeliver.’ Thereby declaring from the start that his search is biased and selective. This experience has been quite instructive for me, in realising that the first requirement for atheism is to be habitually and blatantly dishonest.

  18. downriggershop says:

    ***you who thinks …
***you who thinks homosexuals should be ostricized or thinks women should not have any abortion rights***

Right. You’re a ‘conservative’ who supports gay rights and abortion but cheers when some creepy atheist trashes a religious display – at Christmas time?

I think you’re as confused about your politics as you are about your sexuality.

  19. downriggershop says:

    ***i have proof of …
***i have proof of my claims***

    Present your proofs, Jugs.

Otherwise you’re the same as the “Hitler was a Christian/ 99.9% of Christians/the Pope helped the Nazis” crew posting silly BS here. I’m sure you’re considered quite the intellectual anti Christian at the local skateboard park but you need to lift your game, for online.

  20. tctheunbeliever says:

    Um, no. I have …
Um, no. I have better things to do, and I don’t believe in some greater power who expects me to lie in His name. I look for the truth.

  21. tctheunbeliever says:

    Thanks for the info …
Thanks for the info–I did a few lookups and it appears that Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust is complex and controversial. I found a reference to him “weeping” when he found out about liturgical restrictions in Poland; hopefully he shed a few tears for the Jews, too. But yes, the Church did save quite a few Jews from the death camps (according to Wikipedia, anyway). When atheists learn new things, we can change our minds. And we try to educate ignorant people instead of just taking cheap shots.

  23. purplejugnut says:

    prove it.
    prove it.

  24. purplejugnut says:

i have proof of my …
i have proof of my claims. i found the proof and put it here for you and every one else to see. i can find proof of my other claims and list my sources.
you just say “that’s a lie” and think you have somehow countered my argument or proven something. so what if i cut and paste. it’s the internet dumbass, and those were quotes do you propose that i hand write my replies?
if you have proof show your sources. anyone can make baseless assertions.

  25. mase5701 says:

    I’m done, I would …
I’m done, I would have better luck arguing with my wallpaper on this one.

Bottom line is you believe that God sent himself to planet earth in the form of a human being born of a virgin, on a suicide mission to die in the name of everyone else’s sins….Absolute rubbish!!!!!
