Paul Winter’s 2009 Winter Solstice Celebration at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Since ancient times, people have felt a calling to come together on the long, dark nights around the winter solstice. Within the vast acoustical space of New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Paul Winter Consort has marked this seasonal turning point for 30 years with a celebration of music and dance.

The concerts—which are broadcast each year on 250 National Public Radio stations—have grown to become New York’s favorite holiday alternatives to the Nutcracker and Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The performances combine dance with musical genres ranging from world music and jazz to classical and new age.

Joining the Paul Winter Consort in the 2009 performance were Russia’s Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble, New York’s Forces of Nature Dance Theatre led by Abdel Salaam, and musicians Paul McCandless, Eugene Friesen, Jamey Haddad, Paul Sullivan, Eliot Wadopian, Bill Cahn, Tim Brumfield and Scott Sloan.

Winter Solstice Procession in Sacramento California

This is the Sacramento Grove of the Oak’s 8th Annual Winter Solstice Procession, Wassail, Ritual and Celebration in Midtown Sacramento. Carrying an effigy of the sun on this the longest night of the year, the revelers bid goodbye to last year’s sun, honoring him by processing, singing to the neighbors, and dancing with the folk before laying the sun to rest by burning the effigy and singing of their hope for the new sun to be born in the morning that will mark the beginning of the lenthening of the days once more. Undaunted by the winter rain that fell gently, the good Pagans of the Grove brought smiles and fun to the neighborhood in honor of this most sacred night. They wish for each viewer the deep wisdom of the womb of the Goddess that these midwinter nights reflect. Blessed be.
